A Tuesday in May

It’s 3:30 in the morning and he’s cooing at the diaper changing table nightlight.  After babbling to it for a few minutes he bursts out in his biggest smile – the one he usually saves for when Charles is wearing glasses.  I’m not sure if its the delight of the shadows or a purely internal pleasure of being alive, but he continues to be such a happy baby.

He is weathering the heat quite well, considering the heat index has been over 100 degrees almost every day.  He really loves the water and takes about 4 baths every day, typically as a prelude to a nap.  Due to my own heat rash, I have been spending more time in the girls’ room with the air conditioning on.  Especially in the afternoons when our 3rd floor bedroom feels like a sauna, I find that he and I feel better for a few hours of cooler air.

Meanwhile a proper rainstorm came in last night to break the heat with its thunder lightening and breezes.  We slept well the first part of the night, but Charles was awoken by the chilly 81 degree weather and had to retrieve a sheet to sleep under and his long pants pajamas.  The human body is so amazing to acclimate to all different types of weather.  Charlotte is studying explorers at school and she brings up things I never considered before – like weather!

Though maternity leave is 2/3 over already, now that Caleb has his 2 month vaccines we are starting to venture out more with him.  The plan is to get back to church on Sunday and he spent some time at the office with me, a trial of bringing him to work post maternity leave. We have been extra cautious about exposure with him because Cambodia has a much larger amount of unvaccinated people than the US, so his risk of getting one of the terrible diseases is higher.  I feel so blessed to have the time at home with him and I am also enjoying seeing him take in the new sights and sounds when we go places.
