Last week, Charlotte started second grade… It’s hard to believe that’s true but it is. My little baby is growing up so fast. …and, yesterday, Catherine started Pre-Kindergarten. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, both girls are currently studying online and it will probably be months in the best case scenario before they’re able to study in person. Cambodia is, as I’ve shared, vaccinating rapidly, but the delta variant is here and schools will likely remain closed until daily cases are significantly down.
First Day of School Photos
Catherine had her own idea of what she wanted her first day of school photo to be. I did get a ‘normal’ photo but since she decided to pose so elegantly I decided to use it.
You an see that both girls have inherited my gigantic feet. Good for balance but not for finding shoes.
Online School
On Friday, Catherine received the good news that her new Teacher would be Mr. Joe – Charlotte’s old teacher. Catherine already knows Mr. Joe – and he’s excellent – so she was so beyond excited to start class even if it was online. I told her to get her pencil bag and she came back with the handwriting book she’s been tracing letters in over the break. “I’ll practice writing in this during class” she told me. I thought she was wise to bring something to do with her hands as online class isn’t really physical enough for a pre-K student even with an engaging and fun teacher. She has that very serious ‘I’m a big girl now’ air to her that she gets every time she reaches a milestone that she saw Charlotte reach.
Charlotte has had a harder transition as she moved from Mr. Joe to a new teacher. It’s not an easy transition to make online. She’s also feeling intimidated at being in Second Grade and feels that she can’t read as well as her peers. (We think she’s reading incredibly well considering how far she’s come since January – when she only knew a few words. But a few of her classmates can read English extremely well for their age and I can understand how that is intimidating – especially in an online only setting.)
Charlotte did get a confidence boost with the first art project of the year – a self portrait – which her new teacher loved.
Big steps for the girls!
They just keep on growing no matter how much Crystal tells them to not to.
Charlotte, I love your portrait! Catherine’s, I love your elegant pose! Hope your week goes well!!
I was thinking the same as friend Penny – about both Charlotte’s portrait & Catherine’s pose. Both impressive! Thanks Charles, for sharing.
Wonderful, we love the pictures and the stories of new beginnings and classes, keep the stories and pictures coming!
