Gas stovetops have become more common but many Cambodians use a charcoal burner shaped like a pot to cook. We bought one from a passing by cart a few months ago ($6 USD) and have been enjoying grilling with it.
In design, it’s basically a recycled materials take on the well known Thai Charcoal Burner. Instead of using a metal bucket ours is shaped out of reused metal containers and the clay interior is mostly smashed up bricks.
Charlotte is learning how to safely light and maintain a fire until the charcoal can get going. She’s also practicing her knife cutting. We usually ask her to cut fruits and vegetables but, putting my fingers at risk, sometimes we ask her to cut meat for grilling. Catherine is mostly just skewering and putting in fresh charcoal, but she surprised us by starting the lighter the other day – figured it out by watching her sister.
Come on over and we’d be glad to serve some lightly burnt…but delicious…kebabs.
Looks delicious and sounds like a fun way to cook!!
Wow, we’d love to join you for a meal sometime! Here’s hoping! God bless!
What a great way to learn! Delicious too! I never caught onto grilling…made lots of hockey pucks!
Looks delicious!
how fun! I
We have very similar cooking pots here in Burundi although we haven’t bought one yet. The Kebabs look delicious. Maybe we’ll come by someday to try them 🙂
