On Saturday, Crystal will be flying out for a week long orientation with the departing MCC Country Representatives. They’ll be finishing their term in June so this is the only overlap we’ll get but they’ve been wonderful to communicate with via email and video conferencing. I wanted to share one piece of advice that they gave us.
We encourage you to take advantage of your visit and bring / leave 2 pieces of luggage here. It is very difficult to move a family on 2 pc each. We have found using a combination of both suitcases and Rubbermaid tubs works great. The tubs can then be used for storage and are nearly indestructible. We drill holes thru the edge of the lid and use quick-ties to hold the lid on. The benefit of using these is that if Homeland Security goes through them they have these quick-ties available to re-secure the lid.
Derek & Leakhena, Current MCC Cambodia Country Representatives
I found this advice to be extremely helpful! I had been planning to hunt for extra pieces of luggage at local thrift stores but this seemed like a great solution that also provides durable storage.
So, after dinner, I drilled holes in a Rubbermaid Roughneck storage tub.
Crystal had already packed it full of the priorities – books and duplo blocks.
Then I secured it with zip ties and gave it a test balance on top of a piece of luggage. Probably going to snip the zip ties a bit and we’ll need to put an address label on it but… So far so good!
Why am I not surprised that there’s a Tolkien in there… 😉
Can the zip ties be undone and re-fastened if TSA gets snoopy? If not, you might need to find out what kind of “quick ties” your predecessors used! (Heck of a way for you to learn I’m among your supporters in this amazing endeavor, eh?)
Great question! The zip ties are out of commission if cut but the current Country Representatives have told us that TSA agents are supplied with zip ties and will use them to resecure the tubs.
